American Stroke Month

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Would you know if you were having a stroke? Would you recognize that someone else was having a stroke? The warning signs are:

Sudden numbness/weakness of face, arm, or leg, especially on
one side of the body
Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance/coordination
Sudden severe headache of unknown cause

Time is critical! The longer it takes to get treatment, the more damage is done to the brain. This May—American Stroke Month—encourage awareness with attractive stroke awareness items from JamieCo Design.

Thanks for the sweatshirts

'Twas the day before Thanksgiving when CafePress announced five new styles of sweatshirts. Oof. They're a welcome addition, particularly with the imminent arrival of Wisconsin winter weather, but a rough calculation showed that setting up my existing designs on them would take most of the holiday weekend. It did, but I'm pleased to say that more than 1,200 new sweatshirts are now available at JamieCo Design.

Survivors awareness ribbons

So many awareness ribbon colors are associated with more than one cause that I am adding Survivors designs to JamieCo Design at both CafePress and Zazzle. Like the ribbons themselves, surrounding text has strong clean lines without being rigid and angular.

For anyone who has been through cancer, stroke, or other potentially fatal disease, these designs mark that success, promote awareness, and encourage others by example.

My entire Hallowe'en rhyme, presented in this design of gritty blackletter text, reads:

Trick or treat, Lift my sheet
Give me something DEAD to eat
chomp-chomp, chomp-chomp
chomp!

It tickles my mischievous side for multiple reasons.

Lift my sheet. It's a true story about identical twin boys I'll call Angel and Awful. One Hallowe'en, Awful suggested they go trick-or-treating as bedsheet ghosts. And, he continued, because no one could see under their sheets, they should go without clothes. Angel guardedly agreed and went bare, but this was one of Awful's pranks. He flipped up Angel's sheet in full view of the neighborhood; however, quick-witted Angel yelled "Angel!" at the fleeing Awful. When their parents heard about what happened, it was Awful who got in trouble for going naked. Pranks can backfire! :-P

Something DEAD to eat. This sounds icky in the context of horror movie gore and trick-or-treat swag. Actually, it just refers to my claim that I will try almost any kind of food as long as it doesn't move when I eat it. "What about jello?" our children ask. That doesn't move by itself, I answer. It's not like a block of Jello sits on your plate, sides bulging in and out as it breathes. No living food for me!

Chomp-chomp, chomp-chomp, chomp! My namesake's mother breastfed the triplets. That's all I'm prepared to say about that!

The whole trick-or-treat thang. Whether you call it guising, begging, or trick-or-treating, people have donned unusual clothes to gather handouts on the autumn equinox, October 31, November 1, and even on Thanksgiving. I just think that All Hallows' Eve is an excellent occasion for fun costumes, other wacky creativity, and harmless (I repeat, harmless) mischief. Of course, Hallowe'en at JamieCo Design would be incomplete if I failed to mention the rest of my designs. Here they are:

I'm still merrily adding my designs to JamieCo Design at Zazzle. I have pretty much worked out the way I like to name products and set them up, so this seems a good time to describe some of the gallery's ins and outs.

Buttons and magnets. On the product page for each magnet and button, you can choose the shape (round or square) and size you want. Not all designs look their best on both shapes, however, so I give them helpful names. For example:
- Wilde About Fashion Square Magnet looks better on the square shape, while Wilde About Fashion Round Magnet is better on the round one, but the choice is always yours.
- Red Awareness Ribbon Button looks fine on both shapes, so the product name does not include "Round" or "Square." You choose!
Designs assembled from multiple images. My Hot Pink Awareness Ribbon Mousepad (shown at right) makes a new design from two separate images. If you're looking for a new combination of my designs (for example, colors of awareness ribbons) use the "Send Message" link in the left column of the JamieCo Design gallery to tell me!
Your favorite background colors. Colors I find appealing may not appeal to you, so where it makes sense to me, I set up products so you can set the background color yourself. Here again, I try to give helpful indications, such as:
- Designs with a variety of solid background colors, as in my Wilde About Fashion product line. You can use the colors I set, or not, as you wish.
- Product descriptions that end "Choose your favorite background color and be part of the art."

Coming Out Day is coming up

I introduced my dreamy coming out design, NCOD 2007, for National Coming Out Day last year. (I really did design it in my sleep.)

Now I've made the date 2008 and added all of my coming out designs to the JamieCo Design gallery at Zazzle. (Check out the NCOD 2008 square buttons and magnets!)

My latest news, though, is that two poster versions of NCOD 2008 mark the debut of my designs at Loxly Gallery. I'll be putting more of my work up there soon!

I believe every National Coming Out Day is a crucial opportunity to show support, take stock, and improve awareness and visibility. Still, I've been "out" for decades and, living where I do, orientation is typically a nonissue in my daily life. So, last night I asked some of our family for their thoughts about National Coming Out Day.

• N, 14, says that after coming out, he feels better knowing who he is because he wants to be his honest self. NCOD reminds people, both LGBT and straight, that resources and support are available, that they're not alone in struggling with coming out. Not everyone has Internet access to Google "coming out" (he didn't).

• PPK, 10, thinks he isn't straight. "I love it! It's fabulous!" It's an opportunity to find a new group of people and say "This is me and I'm fabulous… at least this once a year, if not more often. His Pride chant is "We're gay. Okay, get over it!"

• W, 10, thinks he's not gay. It's a good thing because everybody needs to be reminded that everybody is here for a reason, and whoever you are, it's okay.

• KG, 38, my partner, came out without support, without knowing about LGBT resources. "It's sadly necessary because we're not to the point where it's just okay to be who we are, and it's helpful (for all of N's reasons above).

National Coming Out Day is October 11. On that date in 1987, the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights drew hundreds of thousands of people. As a result, a national celebration of coming out was established on the anniversary of the march. Today, the Human Rights Campaign promotes honesty and openness about being gay, lesbian, bi, or trans in its National Coming Out Project, culminating every October 11 in National Coming Out Day. We are far closer to equality than the half million marchers were then. Our visibility is a big part of that change.

Whether coming out to yourself or to others as gay, queer, lesbian, bi, trans, or even as a straight ally, it's a victory worth celebrating and commemorating. Visit hrc.org for information about coming out, including coming out as a straight ally.

For the first time, I am looking forward to casting my vote for President of the United States. I'm reasonably certain I have voted in every presidential election since reaching 18, but I couldn't swear to it. Honestly, it's always been a matter of reluctantly voting for the candidate who seemed likely to do the least damage to my life. That hardly makes one proud of voting, but abstaining doesn't change things for the better.

Any one of the issues now facing our country is enough to overshadow LGBT rights, but we still need them. For once we also have a candidate with the spine to publicly support LGBT people having full and equal rights as U.S. citizens. This year I will take pride in voting for Barack Obama, and I'm pleased to share that in my two newest designs (above) at JamieCo Design.

Barack Obama's positions on LGBT issues *

Hate Crimes. Supports the inclusive Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act to protect the entire GLBT community against bias-motivated violence.
ENDA. Supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, including protection based on gender identity.
DADT. Strongly supports repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" banning the service of openly gay and lesbian people.
Relationship Recognition. Supports equal benefits for same-sex couples at every level of government.
HIV/AIDS. Supports a fully funded Ryan White CARE Act and access for early treatment of HIV under Medicaid (ETHA). Supports comprehensive sex education aimed at preventing disease.
Adoption. Supports the right of same-sex couples to adopt.
Judges. Opposed President Bush's anti-GLBT judicial nominees and has pledged to appoint fair-minded judges to the Supreme Court and the federal bench.
Immigration. Supports the Uniting American Families Act, which would allow an American citizen to petition for immigration sponsorship for a same-sex partner.
Constitutional Amendments. Opposes all divisive and discriminatory constitutional amendments, state or federal, including the proposed amendments In California and Florida.

Active is attractive!

My "Active Is Attractive" design is on shirts, stickers, magnets, buttons, and much more at CafePress and Zazzle.

The message seems obvious, but when popular culture focuses fiercely on youth and the appearance of health and fitness, identifying how looks and lifestyle each affect attractiveness is not so simple. To some degree, the idea that youth is more attractive assumes people are also more active when they are young. Considering how many adult lives involve commuting to a desk job, there is a grain of truth to that, but it's hardly set in stone.

More to the point, people of any age who sit watching the latest "reality" TV show seem less attractive than they would discussing their favorite music, playing Trivial Pursuit, walking the dog, or planting a flower bed. It's also not a competition. You don't have to win marathons or qualify for Mensa to be an attractive person.

As best I can determine, both mentally and physically, active is attractive!

Fanning sparks of LGBT visibility

Earlier this year, I sold a shirt with one of my LGBT-related designs to someone in a country so notorious for its brutal treatment of lesbians and gays that at first I had doubts about the order. It could be genuine, but I would have guessed that access to sites like JamieCo Design is blocked there. My spirits were buoyed more than usual when the sale did go through... the customer could be at risk by making an LGBT-positive statement and is doing so with one of my designs. Very heady stuff.

So far this month, the same person has placed two more orders for shirts of other, similar designs! The choices even suggest purchases for multiple people. I admit that I have little to go on but even so, I'm positively giddy with pride - a feeling of gratification arising from association with something good or laudable - at the idea of my designs helping to fan sparks of LGBT visibility in darker regions of the world.

Although a computer glitch has temporarily put new designs on hold, the silver lining is that it also freed the time I needed to fill out existing CafePress sections of JamieCo Design. After setting up new multi-packs of stickers (see the list at right), I assorted the rest of the shop.

On being a visible LGBT voter

Your vote matters. Slow though change can be, each one is a nudge. In November 2004, exit polls put the LGBT vote at 4% of total turnout. August 2007 brought the first televised debate by presidential candidates exclusively about LGBT issues. Yes, LGBT voters are being recognized as a decisive electoral force. Visibility helps reinforce that reality. Visible votes make change possible.

For hundreds, even thousands of years, people have known that colors affect our emotions. While associations vary among cultures, color and mood are always connected. It suggests that the opposite effect is also true: that is, color preferences are influenced by our feelings.

These days, adults seem less able to take basic precautions on their own without some kind of warning. On the other hand, saying "don't look!" almost guarantees that people will do exactly that. Might as well use it to your advantage.

Displaying this 'Viewer Discretion Advised' message will make some people heed the warning and turn away, but many more will watch to see what happens next. One way or another, it's bound to make things more interesting.

Maya jaguar hieroglyphs

The original design

Last year, one of our children exclaimed "Get yer 'ween on, Punkin!" amid peals of laughter and inspired the design at right, which features the mirthful face of a jack o'lantern, shell invisible in the night. It looks great on black and dark colored shirts.

And now, here's a version for white/light shirts that puts the face in stylized rips (below). You can look at it so many ways... tribal, framed in black flames, dripping darkness... One friend even sees it as evil clown makeup and a green fright wig. I'm tickled to death by the faintly sinister—but oh, so cheerful—feel.

Lucky Friday the 13th

Whether you're such a fortunate cuss that Friday the 13th is lucky or you have had a run of luck so bad that said day of doom is cheerful by comparison, Friday the 13th has the notorious date covered. It ushers in a weekend, so I personally think it must be a pretty decent day.

The Nineteenth century Gothic style of lettering gives the design a fun creepy feel. Shirts, cards, mugs, and other items include a list of Friday the 13th dates (below) to keep track of your lucky days (reminds me of concert tour t-shirts.)

Red white & blue, for one, for all

To live in this country—with its many ethnicities, cultures, religions, and abilities—and say "I am an American" has hardly become simpler to do in 231 years. I think we have achieved the most, both individually and collectively, when patriotism is paired with the conviction that we can rise above flawed leadership, look out for one another, and follow paths to many kinds of success, all without the imposition of rigid conformity.

That's a lot to heap onto just one graphic design, so I distilled it down to awareness and our flag's colors. Like all of my awareness ribbons, there is a strength in the simplicity of Red White & Blue and energy in its curves that some ribbons lack. All in all, this design is a fine way to make any day an Independence Day.

Designing letters for the National Coming Out Day initials of NCOD 2007 was just plain fun, so it was at most a day or two before I elected to see what I could do with the rest of the letters in the name.

No typographer me, but from a graphic design point of view they came out quite nicely; the intent being a look that can be either modern or retro with just enough of each letter's characteristics that words are legible. See, too, how neatly the 't' tucks into place under 'ng'.

Now, I realize that some people are far from fond of pink and rainbows. If color is the only obstacle to shopping for these designs, simply about setting something up in your favorite color.

My dreamy coming out design

One recent restless night, I developed a new National Coming Out Day design in a dream! Seriously. It wasn't some odd dream about working. I took a tame idea I was considering and reworked the layout, colors, and text, including custom "ncod" letters. I sketched it all on the nearest piece of paper when I woke, lest the dream dissolve in my oatmeal and take the design with it.

NCOD 2007 is the happy result! Two Pride colors per letter are gorgeous, less rainbow-y, and the date in its black triangles has a suave rhythm: OCTOBER ELEVEN, TWO THOUSAND SEVEN.

I did ask my partner whether he had odd dreams that same night (before describing my own). He dreamed he tried to wake me and I kept replying, "No, not now. I have to work on this design." I kid you not.

About National Coming Out Day

On October 11, 1987, the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights drew hundreds of thousands of people. As a result, a national celebration of coming out was established on the anniversary of the march. Today, the Human Rights Campaign promotes honesty and openness about being gay, lesbian, bi, or trans in its National Coming Out Project, culminating every October 11 in National Coming Out Day.

Some time ago, I read a blog post by a trans woman who didn't care for transgender being included in "LGBT" because it is about gender identity and being lesbian, gay, or bisexual is not. I think I got her point, but I also think terms for sexual orientation imply gender identity.

Some mental maundering led me to work on ways to show various ways different things combine to make us the people we are. The result is Elements of Humanity, ideograms that represent fundamental aspects of our being.

Bleeding Heart: the flower, not the liberal

Bleeding Heart is an original Art Nouveau style design. It began as an idea for my contribution to a gift exchange last December. The plant was popular in Victorian England, but it is curiously absent from the Art Nouveau floral patterns I have seen. Happily, having some skill in graphic design means I can create what I can't find!

Also known as Lady in the Bath, Lady's Locket, Lyre Flower, and Venus's Car, this lovely perennial originated in northern China. Various sources claim that its blooms represent elegance, fidelity, or 'fly with me' in the Language of Flowers. Be that as it may, graceful pink arcs of Dicentra Spectabilis blossoms are a sure sign of spring and a nostalgic reminder of our mothers' flower gardens.

This triangle knotwork design turned out so nicely that I couldn't just produce it with one color scheme. These are the seven best.

Each one has multiple personalities. Large individual knots on shirts feel tribal. As a repeating pattern, the band across cards and mugs is strikingly floral. Other sizes on buttons, tiles, et cetera stand out beautifully against coordinating background colors.

I think most of us understand that LGBT Pride is more than rainbows and revels. Faced with social, political, and religious opposition to our very existence, Pride is what enables us to lead our lives as lesbian, gay, bi, and trans people. It takes matter-of-fact, day-by-day intestinal fortitude and just plain guts, even where a legal patchwork affords us partial equality.

These were my thoughts as I worked on this Pride 2007 design. Skillfully arranged text and a pink triangle are strong and modern, just like us. Just like you. When the year's celebrations are over, this design will be history, too, but you'll still have your JamieCo Design prideware to remember them by!

CafePress announced new merchandise last Friday: women's v-neck t-shirts and more colors of light and dark tees!

When I started JamieCo Design there were so few color choices that now these seem ample. I do hope for an eventual selection of women's t-shirt colors on par with the dark t-shirts. My personal favorite is olive green.

Right now, however, I have plenty to do. I'm about one-third through adding v-necks and reviewing designs to be sure they work with the new colors. After that, I have a spanking new Rainbow Pride design ready to go. It'll be my nineteenth design tihs year. Oh, prolific me!

GLBT ribbons from JamieCo Design are another attractive way to show your Pride and awareness. Like my solid-color awareness ribbons, these designs are simple, flowing, and not at all rigid or stiff looking. This time around I also developed an end-to-end version of the rainbow stripes. The result, Rainbow Pride II, reminds me of tropical birds every time I see it!

In appreciation of Allies

My original Proud Ally and GLBT Ally designs were among the first I put on shirts, buttons, stickers, etc. They've been so popular that I created two new Ally designs in thanks.

My LGBT and GLBT Ally Baubles are easier to read and release the Rainbow Pride colors from their stripes. The overall look is more casual and comfy; a friendly design for our Ally friends.

I couldn't very well design new Pride art and not come up with something for our Allies as well. Ally Pop uses the same big bold style plus shades of Rainbow Pride colors that look almost edible, and ALLY is formed by the spaces between shapes, making the item part of the design. Tres cool.

Pop art Pride

Some ideas "grab you by the boo-boo" and just don't let go! Last weekend I was chatting with one of our teens when he found a VOTE design in the style of Robert Indiana's pop art LOVE and suggested a similar design of the letters GLBT. I suspect that he found my enthusiasm for the idea a little embarrassing but like I said, some things just grab your attention.

The results are refreshingly different. Lesbian, gay, bi, and trans—we are each more than an abbreviation and colored stripes. Ditto my eight new Pride designs. Each letter is defined as much by its relation to the entire design as its own identity. The whole is big and bold.

GSA logos redux

Given the antipathy in many school systems toward gay-straight alliances, these groups deserve all the options I can offer. To that end, I've placed basic versions of my GSA logos on a variety of items at JamieCo Design. The designs can still be customized with a group's school name, officer titles, and so forth.

Of course, if GSAs weren't peppered with preposterous accusations of being "sex clubs" or of recruiting gays, the need for students to create their own safe environments would be considerably less.

Spin and Neon are rotational ambigrams (they read the same upside down as right side up). ToonA and ToonB are fun and colorful because safe places don't have to be somber. Classic is dignified, but still colorful and attractive.

My broken anti-Valentine

JamieCo Design presents the perfect anti-Valentine for the broken-hearted. On the shattered pieces of a candy heart the message can still be read... ALL MY LOVE.

Candy message hearts. They're a hallmark of the force fed season of extracting gifts for professions of affection. This illustrated lump of tasteless sugar has been crushed by mocking Cupid's boot heel... if Cupid wore boots, that is.

I figure that true romantics don't need to succumb to the commercial trappings of simultaneously-scheduled affection. It's actually kind of creepy. I have far more interesting things in mind for my partner. In the meantime, join me in a poking a little fun at Valentines Day. :D

The English language has an absurd number of synonyms for "penis" (Wikisaurus lists nearly 90). As clever and even comical as many of them are, how can we men hope to have healthy attitudes about sex and our bodies if we must also be so squeamish? It's called a PENIS.

Time for a design! This one is for men who have the confidence to dispense with euphemisms for their body parts. In addition to a variety of men's shirts, the design is available on buttons and boxer shorts.

Introducing Mr. Bliz

He's classic but cool! Viewed from above, the jaunty Mr. Bliz has a charming smile and open arms that invite all to frolic in his winter wonderland at JamieCo Design. Who knew that snowmen have such warm hearts?

This design draws most on memories from my childhood. When I was a boy, the top hat, stick arms, and lumps of coal were de rigueur for drawing a "proper" snowman. Mr. Bliz is a nostalgic and hopefully better-rendered nod to those criteria. Then there was an unfinished snow... person I built where it could be seen from my upstairs bedroom window.

So now you know. ;-)

Starchy miser preview

This is the Christmas anagram I mentioned Thursday. It worked out pretty well. "Merry Christmas" can be rearranged into "Mr. Starchy Miser", you see. I'll explain more when everything is ready to go.

Although the design is finished—it looks much better full size, by the way—that still leaves producing and uploading final graphics, setting them up on new sections of products, writing product and section descriptions, spreading the word, et cetera.

Mr. Starchy Miser should be ready to go at JamieCo Design by late Tuesday or early Wednesday, but don't let that keep you from looking around the shop and picking up a thing or two before then!

Albino brain chiggers?

No, it's not an alien invasion. To me, the year's first snow verges on magical. The world quiets and changes shape. The pace and patterns of our lives adjust. Every year I look forward to the beginning of this season and to the feelings of peace and wonder that it brings. I'll long for spring soon enough, but for now I look forward to strolling through the crystalline swirl.

This gentle spiral of original snowflake designs is Flurry, my newest work at JamieCo Design. Each is different, each is inspired by actual intricate, fascinating, and sometimes exotic snow crystals. They are available individually and all together.

I've always been fond of my tribal designs. I also like black-on-green designs, so I didn't hesitate to adapt Ink to these new olive green shirts at JamieCo Design. The designs still have a drop shadow and subtle, colored interior pattern. I'm very pleased with how they look. Here they are...

Rainbow Lokahi

Lokahi is Hawaiian for unity, agreement, accord, unison, and harmony. My original design combines the word in exuberant letters with hibiscus flowers and rainbow Pride colors into an optimistic and ambitious statement for GLBT people: Rainbow Unity! Rainbow Lokahi!

A GreatGear compadre was so eager for me to do a Pride design of "lokahi" that I added the idea to my pile of such things. (Hiya, Cassie.) I didn't know what to do with it—sometimes I need a break from the red orange yellow green blue purple thang—but I pondered while working on other designs.

Then two days ago this design popped into my head, complete in almost every detail. I love when that happens. My muse must be close by.

GLBT holiday wreaths

Affirming our GLBT Pride is appropriate any day of the year. The colors are also easy to incorporate into bright designs, so it made sense to use them on holiday wreaths at JamieCo Design. Cleverly designed building dates inspired the interlocking "2006" at the center, while arcs of rainbow, bi, or trans Pride baubles dance all 'round the year upon a green, green wreath.
